Solano County, CA
Ledgewood Creek – High energy costs initiated prompted Rick Wehman to look into the possibility of installing a wind turbine at the Ledgewood Creek in Solano County. The 400-acre vineyard uses about 2,400 kWh/month at its main offices and another 400 kWh/month at a separate service located at the ranch manager’s house on the other side of the property. “It’s usually windy out here, and I thought it might offset costs and save energy in the long run.” Wehman looked for a wind energy system dealer who would install the system for him, including permitting, rebate application, and obtaining a net metering arrangement with PG&E.
Ledgewood Creek installed two 10 kW turbines, one to serve the ranch offices, and another serving the ranch manager’s house and a secondary office. The turbines were installed in June 2001, but didn’t become operational until October. The two turbines have generated approximately 2,300 kWh total during the first eight months of operation. Wehman is hopeful that with better wind conditions and some trouble-shooting of the turbines’ reset mechanism, he and vineyard owner Dean Frisbie eventually will see each of the wind systems generating up to 600 or 700 kWh/month.
