Contra Costa County, CA
Brentwood, CA – Steve Mosby, a rancher in Brentwood, which sits on hills on the outskirts of the East Bay, is another satisfied owner of a new small wind turbine. “I had just built a house and was looking for another project to do,” confessed Mosby. “I am a tinkerer and had big plans to build something that would look like one of those old Dutch windmills. After looking into it, however, I discovered that my original plan was very inefficient because the higher you go [with your wind turbine tower], the better the energy flow.”
The environment, electric reliability, or even home energy use, were not Mosby’s top priorities. “I was looking for a 30-foot diameter blade because I thought that size would look best. I wasn’t really concerned about how much energy it produced. It turns out that the Jacobs I bought generates about 10 kilowatts (kW) – which is about right for a home my size.” Since all wind turbines 10 kW or less are eligible for the CEC buy-down program, Mosby, too, had about half of his installation costs covered by state funds. “The capital costs will be paid off in three years,” he boasted. “The breeze starts up at noon and goes until dark. That just happens to be the same time we are running our AC.” Bills that used to be $120 per month fell as low as $5 during peak wind season. “It’s just an awesome machine,” concluded Mosby.
