Environmental, Health, and Safety

The American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) and the wind industry place a high priority on protecting the safety and health of the wind energy workforce. Safety training and awareness campaigns are at the forefront of AWEA’s priorities. AWEA engages regularly with several federal agencies including the Center for Disease Control's National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and a formal Alliance with the Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). AWEA is working closely with OSHA to improve worker health and safety and to better inform the wind industry about OSHA and OSHA about the wind industry.

Safety Data Collection

AWEA collects data on the safety and health performance of the industry to help companies benchmark themselves against their peers, improve their performance, and to identify areas of focus for training or other activities. The report provides data on the overall industry and breaks down the information by industry segments, such as construction, manufacturing, and operations and maintenance. The 2017 report is available at the AWEA Bookstore.

Safety Awareness Campaigns

Because of our commitment to our workforce, safety and health training and awareness is a core value to AWEA. AWEA’s Environmental, Health, and Safety Committee safety awareness campaigns are at the forefront of AWEA’s priorities. Every October is AWEA Safety Month that focuses on key areas to help keep your employee's healthy and safe.

Safety and Health Excellence Award Program

It is vitally important to recognize safety and health excellence while creating a platform for sharing environmental, health, and safety (EHS) best practices among AWEA member organizations. In light of this aspect and our dedication to EHS, AWEA presents the Safety and Health Excellence Award Program recognizing the excellence of AWEA member company’s safety and health performance, the programs used to achieve that performance, and recognizing companies’ EHS best practices of success. This award, AWEA Safety and Health Recognition Silver and AWEA Safety and Health Achievement Gold, is presented at the annual AWEA Wind Project O&M and Safety Conference. Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Committee

AWEA’s EHS Committee promotes the safety and health of the wind energy industry workforce, seeks to achieve a safe workplace for all, and provides a forum for sharing of information and industry best practices as well as lessons learned. The committee actively engages the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and other federal agencies as needed on regulatory activities and other cooperative partnerships and ensures that all members have a voice and participate in facilitating the committee’s activities to further the goals of continuous improvement. AWEA members are invited to participate on committees. Click here to learn more about committee activities and guidelines and contact us at safety@awea.org to join the EHS Committee.
