Inflation Adjustment Bumps PTC Up to 2.1 Cents/kWh
In its annual review of inflation adjusted items, the U.S. Internal Revenue Service made an upward adjustment of the federal production tax credit from 2 cents per kWh to 2.1 cents per kWh.
While reviewed on an annual basis, the PTC has not been increased every year, although it has tracked with inflation since the mechanism was first put in place in 1992. Upon its inception, the PTC was 1.5 cents per kWh. The adjustment came as welcome news in the wind energy arena, but what industry members remain most concerned about is the PTC’s scheduled expiration at the end of this year. Advocates have been calling for an extension so that the industry can operate and plan in a stable business environment as Congress, which is overwhelmingly supportive of the credit in principle, continues to haggle over the exact form such an extension would take.
