FORMER PRESIDENT GEORGE W. BUSH, The American Wind Energy Association today announced that former President George W. Bush, U.S. Senator Byron Dorgan (D-N.D.), and Assistant Secretary for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Cathy Zoi will address the WINDPOWER 2010 Conference & Exhibition to be held in Dallas May 23-26. “It is quite an honor to host a former President, a senior U.S. Senator and a senior U.S. Department of Energy official at WINDPOWER 2010,” said AWEA CEO Denise Bode. “A recent poll shows that an overwhelming majority of American voters, across party lines, want more wind power and support a national Renewable Electricity Standard (RES) to increase its use. Each of our three speakers understands this political reality. They understand that wind power works for America and they are paving the way for fair policies and rules for this popular, clean, American source of energy.” As Governor of Texas, George W. Bush signed into law one of the nation’s most successful state Renewable Electricity Standards and appointed Pat Wood III, then head of the Texas Public Utility Commission, to put in place non-discriminatory transmission policies. These market-based policies jump-started the wind market in Texas and paved the way for its soaring success. During the Bush Administration, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) issued a comprehensive technical study showing that wind, without the need for any technological breakthrough, could provide 20% of the nation’s electricity by 2030—a share as large as nuclear power or natural gas provides today. Wind power’s success in Texas and the findings of the 20% report confirm what Americans know: wind power works for our economy. U.S. Senator Byron Dorgan understands that wind power works nationally, and locally, for all Americans, and has long supported wind power development, both for his windy state of North Dakota and for the nation as a whole. Senator Dorgan is trying to pass a strong national Renewable Electricity Standard (RES), to provide investors and manufacturing companies with certainty, spur renewable energy development, and create jobs. Senator Dorgan has also supported the federal wind energy production tax credit, as well as its conversion under the stimulus program, and advocated long-term extensions to give the industry more certainty. Senator Dorgan has proposed forward-looking reforms regarding how we plan, site, and pay for transmission lines in this country, in order to increase the overall reliability of the grid and make it possible to tap the nation’s vast wind resources. As Chairman of the Energy and Water Appropriations subcommittee, Dorgan has also supported R&D on a variety of wind energy issues. Assistant Secretary for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) Cathy Zoi oversees the U.S. Department of Energy’s promotion of marketplace integration of renewable energy and efficiency technologies, and plays a key role in implementing the Administration’s vision of a vibrant, competitive clean energy economy. Before leading EERE, Zoi was the founding chief executive officer of the Alliance for Climate Protection, which was launched by Vice-President Al Gore to draw attention to the urgency of global warming and to the technologies that are available to solve it. Wind works for a clean energy economy, and Assistant Secretary Zoi is helping unleash that power and promise.
