Albuquerque, New Mexico -- The American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) applauds New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, the Western Governors Association and the organizers of the North American Energy Summit in Albuquerque for focusing attention on the critical energy issues facing the Western United States and the entire nation. Randall Swisher, AWEA’s executive director, today released the following statement: “The western U.S. has massive wind resources that can help answer the country’s need for clean, efficient, and reliable electricity. The single most important thing the Governors can do today to unleash that potential is to call on Congress to renew the federal wind energy production tax credit now. We also urge the Governors to address transmission and market barriers to wind over the longer term by supporting the wind power “pipeline” concept AWEA has proposed to boost wind energy development in the West by as much as 30,000 – 60,000 MW in the next five to 10 years. We look forward to working with the Western Governors Association, key Western stakeholders, and others interested in supporting the development of clean, renewable, domestic energy sources like wind and we thank Governor Richardson for his continued national leadership in this important effort.” ### AWEA, formed in 1974, is the national trade association of the U.S. wind energy industry. The association’s membership includes turbine manufacturers, wind project developers, utilities, academicians, and interested individuals.
