About the Workshop

Early Registration Deadline: March 3, 2011 - Register Today!

Focus on U.S. Wind Turbine Manufacturing, and Transportation and Logistics Strategies to Build the U.S. Supply Chain

Benefit from this educational event's exemplary program which highlights domestic wind energy manufacturing successes and strategies that build the wind energy industry supply chain - with a special focus on transportation and logistics issues in the wind energy industry. Only at this event can you learn from wind turbine OEMs and suppliers about wind turbine manufacturing and component supply. Hear from leading experts, and learn what you need to know to enter and remain in the supply chain. You'll also experience expert presentations showcasing wind turbine OEMs, case studies, and special interactive discussions that will enable you to understand the process of becoming a supplier or service provider to the wind energy industry. This workshop will focus on the transportation and logistics aspects of moving very large and complex components from manufacturing facilities to wind project locations. The complexities of moving large loads by rail, truck, barge, and other means are enormous. Companies involved in transportation of wind turbines and turbine components by these modes will not want to miss this event!

Learn:
  • what the market holds for the wind energy industry for 2011

  • how wind turbine manufacturers are meeting their supply chain needs

  • key wind energy industry challenges and case studies in the transportation and logistics areas

  • the process of entering the wind industry supply chain from a special interactive dialogue session

  • and much more!

Special, Co-Located Event: Transportation & Logistics Summit

On Wednesday, March 23, the AWEA Transportation & Logistics Working Group will host an invitation-only "Transportation & Logistics Summit." This special event will explore many issues facing the industry related to transportation and logistical services, and will include dialog and planning activities to move this sector of the industry ahead in 2011. Only AWEA business members and invited guests are eligible to attend. For more information, please contact Tom Maves at tmaves@awea.org.

Why is this Workshop Important?

Demand: Installations have seen tremendous growth; by the end of 2009, installations grew more than 10,000 MW to over 35,000 cumulative MW. In 2010, installations are expected to exceed 5,000 MW. This has spurred enormous demand for domestic manufacturing capacity, and has resulted in a significant shift towards domestic component sourcing. The wind energy industry is on track to supply 20% of the nation's electricity by 2030 - over 30,000 megawatts have been installed to date, and another 260,000 megawatts will need to be installed by 2030. That represents an additional 65,000 turbines to be installed between now and 2030.

Components
: In the past five years, the domestic market for wind turbine components has experienced remarkable growth - an average of 33% per year through 2009. In 2005, wind turbines contained approximately 25% domestically-produced components, and AWEA estimates that current turbines contain approximately 50%. This growth is promising, but there's still tremendous opportunity for growth within U.S.-based manufacturing, fabricating, and service companies. This shift has been further spurred by the domestic sourcing goals of OEMs. There are more than 8,000 separate components and piece-parts in a large-scale wind turbine - including mechanical and electrical components, structural components, consumables, and other commodities - making a typical wind turbine dependent on a range of industries.
