Why is This Workshop Important?

Demand:Installations over the past 5 years have increased significantly with nearly 35% average annual growth. By the end of 2010, over 40,000 megawatts (MW) of wind capacity were installed in the U.S.; up from less than 10,000 MW at the end of 2005. While installations grew more than 10,000 MW in a single year in 2009, the year 2010 saw the market drop to just over 5,000 MW of new wind capacity due to slow recovery of the economy – and power demand – as well as continued uncertainty looming around national renewable policy. However, 2010 still saw 15% growth and maintained the double-digit growth trend seen over the past several years. This growth has spurred enormous demand for domestic manufacturing capacity, and has resulted in a significant shift toward domestic component sourcing. The wind energy industry remains on track to supply 20% of the nation's electricity by 2030 and over 40,000 MW have been installed to date. Another 260,000 MW will need to be installed, representing an additional 80,000 wind turbine, between now and 2030.

Components: In the past five years, the domestic market for wind turbine components has experienced remarkable growth – an average of nearly 35% per year through 2010. Prior to 2005, approximately 25% of the turbine and component value was domestically sourced. Today AWEA estimates that 50% of the turbine value is sourced in the U.S. due to strong growth and investment in domestic manufacturing.

Iowa Gov. Brandstad to Speak

Iowa Governor Terry Branstad is no stranger to politics having served three terms in the Iowa House, and 17 non-consecutive years in the Governor's seat. Well known for his hands-on, round-the-clock approach to economic development in the state of Iowa, Governor Branstad took the state's 8.5% unemployment rate in 1983 down to 2.5% in 1999. Now in 2011, he recognizes the potential the wind industry has to help him get Iowans back to work and reach his goal of creating 200,000 new jobs in Iowa over the next five years.  We are proud to welcome Governor Branstad as a speaker for our upcoming Wind Power Supply Chain Workshop.

1:00 PM - 2:15 PM
Current State of the U.S. Wind Energy Industry

The U.S. wind energy industry is growing, even in the face of uncertain energy policies from Washington, DC and the lingering effects from a major economic recession.  The industry is on track to achieve the trajectory outlined in the U.S. DOE “20% Wind Energy by 2030” report, but will need to install an additional 60,000 utility-scale wind turbines over the next 18 years to achieve that target.

Learn where the wind energy industry stands heading into the final quarter of 2011 and what the prospects look like in the U.S. market in 2012.  This session will focus on policy issues and market dynamics for the wind energy industry overall, as well as project installation trends and forecasts. After attending the session, participants will be able to assess the political and economic environment in the wind industry and the need for continued focus on policies and initiatives to drive demand for more wind turbine installations and thus product demand for wind turbines and turbine components in the U.S.

Moderator: Ed Weston, Director, GLWN

Identifying High-Impact Market Strategies for your Region

How do your regional assets match the needs of the wind market sectors?  What components and systems are likely to allow for companies in your region to be domestically or globally competitive?  When does it make sense to develop wind value chain leaders who already employ talent in your region? This session will discuss those questions and more as panelists help you to start a regional asset assessment, profile the needs of wind energy markets, identify high value components and systems, and discuss cluster development strategies that nurture a strong wind energy value chain.  By combining those topics with case studies of successful state and regional wind energy economic development strategies, this session will provide you with essential keys for identifying a focused, high-impact market strategy for your region.
