Innovations in Project Development

Wind energy project development has been especially challenged since the credit crunch of 2008.  The hurdles just seem to be getting higher and higher.  To navigate successfully to the finish line means confronting thorny problems in ever more creative ways.  This session encourages heavy audience input before a panel that will introduce creative solutions in offtake, transmission, recent wildlife challenges, financing challenges and secret weapons technologies!

Facilitator: Tom Hiester, Vice President, Development, RES America Development

Panelists:

  • Colonel Howard (Dave) Belote, USAF, Ret., Director, Department of Defense Energy Siting Clearinghouse
  • Alan Dash, Senior Vice President, Starwood Energy Group

  • Peter Sullivan, Director Development, First Wind

Wind Integration

Wind plants are increasingly viewed as mainstream power plants and as a result must participate in markets and follow dispatch instructions, rather than being 'must take' energy resources. Recent events in Midwest Independent Transmission System Operator (MISO) and Bonneville Power Administration (BPA) show the broad range of proposed solutions to this challenge. Policies that could assign significant integration costs to wind plants have also been a hot topic at the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC). What does this mean to the risk and revenue of wind plants, and how can we support rules that are fair and reasonable for integrating very large amounts of wind energy?

Facilitator: Mark Ahlstrom, Chief Executive Officer, WindLogics

  • Gary Moland, Director, Market Analysis, GL Garrad Hassan Americas
