About the Event
We want YOU to help America create a secure and diverse supply of homegrown energy to power the nation, and to help put more people back to work. Wind energy delivers in both of these areas, but requires Congress to take immediate action to pass a four-year extension of the Production Tax Credit (PTC).
AWEA Wind Power On Capitol Hill is the event that allows you unprecedented access to the leaders that hold the power to pass the necessary legislation to drive the wind energy industry forward, encouraging the continued growth of clean, affordable, homegrown wind energy. Attend this event to learn how to effectively communicate with Congressional offices, conduct face-to-face meetings on the Hill with your Members of Congress and their staff, advocate for the industry's top policy needs and push for a PTC extension.
Why is the PTC so Important?
The wind industry seeks long-term tax policies, lasting more than just a few years, to provide consistency and market certainty. The federal Production Tax Credit (PTC) is the primary financial policy for the wind industry since its inception in 1992 and has been extended mostly in one- and two-year intervals, and even allowed to expire on occasion. The PTC is an effective tool to keep electricity rates low and encourage development of proven renewable energy projects. A vote for a PTC extension is a vote for creating American jobs and investing in proven clean energy technology. Read more about the PTC in AWEA's PTC fact sheet.
-
Equipped with the PTC, there has been a 90% drop in the price of wind power since 1980, benefiting utilities and consumers.
-
A vote for a PTC extension is a vote for creating American jobs and investing in proven clean energy technology.
-
Failure to extend the PTC beyond 2012 will roll back progress that we have made as a nation to diversify the U.S. electricity portfolio and create an American manufacturing success story.
Strengthen Your Advocacy Skills
As a participant in the Wind Power on Capitol Hill workshop, you will develop your advocacy skills. You will be briefed on the current federal energy policy issues and the state of play on Capitol Hill. Advocacy experts will train you on how to effectively communicate with Congressional offices. You will be able to practice making a concise ask, and answering tough questions, so that you will feel prepared to conduct a Hill meeting the next day – and other days in the future!
Who Should Participate
All wind industry professionals interested in extending the Production Tax Credit (PTC) and building or strengthening relationships with their Members of Congress should participate. We encourage a diverse group of companies from all segments of the wind industry to join us for this event.
Educate Your Leaders
Elected officials assess which issues are important to their constituents based on meetings and conversations with them. This event allows you to demonstrate that you and your company feel strongly about wind industry issues and gives you the opportunity to explain the connection between policy and the operations of your company. Let your elected officials know what your business looks like currently, and what it looks like without any federal policy certainty beyond 2012, so that he or she will understand the impact that relevant legislation can have on the state or district.
Visit Capitol Hill

Hill Visits
Meeting face-to-face with Members of Congress and their staff is one of the best ways to educate your elected officials about your company and the industry’s top policy needs. By traveling to Washington, DC to educate your elected officials in person, you will demonstrate that you and your company feel strongly about the issues that you will address. You should take the opportunity to explain the connection between policy and the operations of your company. Let your elected officials know what your business looks like currently, and what it looks like without any federal policy certainty beyond 2012, so that he or she will understand the impact that relevant legislation can have on the state or district.
Hill Meetings Arrangements
AWEA will set up Capitol Hill meetings for you! Please do not put your own meeting requests in to Hill offices, as you will be taking away from your industry colleagues’ opportunities to participate in meetings. Based upon the information you provide along with your registration about your company’s office, project, and/or facility location(s), we will secure meetings with your elected officials and provide you with a personalized schedule.
Meeting Participants
In your meetings, you will be joined by wind industry colleagues who are also doing business in the Member’s state. A representative from the AWEA staff will facilitate the meeting and ensure that everyone has a chance to participate.
Finding The Common Ground
Regardless of whether or not you voted for the Member that you are meeting with, he or she still represents you on Capitol Hill. It is probably not a good idea to bring to the table all of your differences politically, but to find common ground on the issues at hand.
What To Wear
The dress code on Capitol Hill is business attire. You will be walking between buildings, so please wear shoes that are comfortable for walking. As this event is in February, please be prepared for cold weather.
Side Meetings
Wind Power On Capitol Hill includes a number of important meetings for AWEA Committees, Working Groups, and Leadership Council.
