Remote Sensing:Toys or Tools

Learning Objectives:
The industry has been using remote sensing devices for a number of years but the question still remains unanswered: are they just toys for the academic or tools for the engineer. Have we become too reliant on conventional cup based anemometers to realise the potential these devices can offer in terms of:

  • Improving resource assessment accuracy at lower costs.
  • Advancing our knowledge of complex flows to reduce turbine lifecycle costs.
  • Reducing the uncertainty in wakes models.

This session will explore each of these areas and hopefully show that these devices can move from academia to engineering

Monetizing Resource Assessment Campaign Design

Uncertainty reduction is at the forefront of every wind analyst's mind when designing a resource assessment campaign. In this session, we will ask the industry a) how uncertainty is quantified and b) how that uncertainty translates into project value. We will then draw comparisons between WRA investment costs and project value, with the ultimate goal of calculating the return on investment for various improvements in the WRA campaign.

Post-Construction Operational Feedback

Given the tighter-than-ever PPA market, high-volume of merger and acquisition activities and number of portfolio refinancing of operational projects in the US wind industry, there has rarely been a time where understanding and predicting the future performance of a project has been more critical.  This session seeks to provide attendees with a greater insight into post-construction energy yield analysis and how one can best leverage and utilize the data available from an operational project for future decision making.

Atmospheric Variability (Open)

This session addresses how wind resource analysts can recognize and minimize risk due to the numerous ways atmospheric variability can affect wind resources. We will discuss:

•       Data collection for wind resource assessment and turbine suitability assessments: are there times when collection of 1 Hz wind data has advantages over 10-minute average data? If so, when?

•       Atmospheric datasets for wind resource assessment: how do newer atmospheric reanalysis datasets compare to each other and to the standard NCEP/ NCAR Reanalysis Project (NNRP) dataset?

•       Generating dynamically downscaled long-term wind resource datasets: are there new approaches exploiting recent advances in atmospheric science?

•       Climate variability: how does seasonal variability in wind resources affect energy production, and are there practical techniques to design wind turbine layouts to maximize energy production and reduce wake impacts?

Flow Modeling

The session on flow modeling will explore several advanced computational techniques for capturing the nuances of flow across terrain where stability and other thermal effects cause difficulty for traditional linearized flow models.  The speakers will each explain the challenges of applying their particular modeling approach to help understand flow features seen in measured site data.

They will examine projects in areas as diverse as the Great Plains, Chile, and the Eastern Rockies where measurements have provided puzzling features that can best be understood and explained by using a more sophisticated approach than those traditionally used.   The speakers will present a description of the site measurements, their modeling approach, plus a synopsis of how their approach was used to make sense of the site data and by aiding the understanding of the measurements improve the overall prediction of the wind resource.
