About the Seminar
This year has seen significant developments with respect to transmission and wind energy:
-
Federal regulators released monumental new rules on planning and cost allocation
-
The White House has committed to expediting permitting for several new transmission lines, most of which will serve renewable energy projects
-
The transmission build-out in Texas has continued
-
Interconnection-wide planning advanced
-
Iowa has successfully integrated 20% wind energy
-
Curtailment expanded, particularly in the Northwest
Next year promises additional major milestones. Don’t miss the unparalleled opportunity provided by AWEA’s Wind Power Transmission Seminar to network with industry leaders and understand how recent and future developments will impact your business!
The AWEA Wind Power Transmission Seminar is the leading U.S. transmission event dedicated solely to addressing the challenges and identifying the solutions to transmission and wind energy. The workshop brings together top experts from the wind industry, transmission sector, utilities, consulting, and policymaking worlds to discuss the progress being made, difficulties that remain, paths forward and lessons learned on wind energy transmission.
Why is this Seminar Important?
Inadequate transmission access is one of the key constraints on the wind industry today, and is the most significant barrier identified by the Department of Energy in achieving 20% of our nation’s electricity from wind energy. With roughly 35% annual growth in the U.S. wind industry over the past five years, and over 300,000 MW of proposed wind projects waiting to be connected to the power grid, the development of new transmission lines is vital to the continued growth of the wind industry. While some progress is being made on planning, policy, transmission build-out, and integration, it’s not happening fast enough to meet the needs of the wind industry. This seminar will explore transmission developments and options to assist the progress.

Why Attend AWEA Events?
Dedicated & Reliable Legislative Support
AWEA events offer a forum for sharing and examining the latest legislative and regulatory updates, ultimately ensuring the progress of wind energy. No other organization is uniquely dedicated to, or does more to support, the wind industry from a legislative and regulatory standpoint. Working in conjunction with members of Congress, state legislators, federal agencies, utility regulators, the media, and others, AWEA increases the presence of wind power in the U.S, delivers official and timely updates, and ensures that wind energy interests are addressed in relevant legislation and regulatory processes. Only AWEA employs an experienced policy team that utilizes a variety of grassroots programs, including WindPAC, AWEA’s political action committee, to support the entire wind energy industry.
Reinvest in the Industry
AWEA reinvests its events’ profits directly into the wind energy industry, unlike competing events that take profits out of the industry and put them into private company hands. With AWEA events, your dollars are used to promote federal and state wind energy policies, to support and grow your business, and advance the wind industry as a whole.
Attend and Learn:
-
What RTOs/ISOs and individual utilities are doing to comply with the new rules on planning and cost allocation
-
Where the most progress is being made on integration issues, and what lessons can be learned
-
What costs are being proposed for integration, reliability, or other purposes that will impact your bottom line
-
What transmission, if any, is obtaining permits and getting built across jurisdictions
-
Results of the most recent integration studies
-
Which financing models are getting transmission built
-
What the interconnection-wide transmission planning modeling efforts are likely to show
-
The link between planning and projects getting built

FERC Order 1000: Monumental, Moderate or Somewhere in Between for the Wind Energy Industry?
Facilitator: Doug Smith, Attorney, Van Ness Feldman
The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission's (FERC) Order 1000 will have a number of significant impacts on the wind industry. Order 1000 has different short- and long-term implications that vary between organized and unorganized markets. This session's panelists seek to break down the overly complicated nature of Order 1000 and focus on the key issues presented to regulated entities, and provide different perspectives and approaches to response strategies associated with planning, cost allocation, and contractual rights such as ROFR. From more general summaries forecasting what the Order will mean to the industry as a whole and the role of states' involvement to more narrow accounts of how compliance filings can aid in planning and legislative participation and influence, this session provides a complete narrative of what the FERC Order 1000 means for the future of the wind industry.

Integration: The Good, The Bad, and UglyFacilitator: Melissa Seymour, Director, Regional Markets & Regulation, Iberdrola Renewables
The large increase of variable energy generation across the U.S. has presented both unique opportunities as well as technical challenges. This session will focus on the challenges, solutions, and successes of integrating variable energy resources into the power grid. The panelist will also address rules and regulations that drive integration costs, including FERC's proposed tariff reforms designed to allow for a more efficient integration of variable energy resource into the power system. Nickel and Diming: Wind Integration Costs You Need to Know About
Facilitator: Kris Zadlo, Vice President, Invenergy
With the country slowly rebounding from the economic downturn, it's important that industry leaders and stakeholders understand all aspects of wind integration costs. New rules and regulatory compliance costs imposed by FERC, NERC, RTO/ISOs, and non-RTO areas will impact all stakeholders in the wind industry. This update on integration charges, interconnection costs, and market cost shifts will leave attendees with a comprehensive understanding on the risks and costs associated with wind interconnection, integration, and ongoing operations.

Transmission Planning, Financing and Siting: How to Get from Brainstorming to Steel in the Ground
Facilitator: Paul Jett, Director, Business Development, American Transmission Company
With the White House giving more attention to modernizing the U.S. electric grid it is important that all stakeholders have a firm understanding of which financing and cost allocation models are succeeding in getting transmission built, as well as the potential of stakeholder influence. Through a combination of presentations and case studies this session seeks to investigate which approaches to transmission planning are proving to be the most effective in expediting the process from planning and siting to construction. Topics range from market-oriented views on financing models and preliminary modeling from DOE funded interconnection wide planning efforts to a more legislative framework dealing with stakeholder involvement and the role of states in planning and siting.
