Wind Turbine Service Technician Core Skill Set

Status: We are currently working to finalize the Review Committee and the approval process. Additional information will be made available by the end of March 2010. For questions please contact education@awea.org

Wind Technicians have become a demanded position in the growing industry.

In order for the United States to
reach the U.S. Department of Energy goal of 20% electricity from wind energy by 2030 Report, there will need to be 1 wind technician to service every new 10MW installed. That means that in 2009 alone over 500 new wind technicians were needed. The wind industry has been attaining the yearly goals set by the Department of Energy, and if it continues, there will need to be over 30,000 technicians by 2010.

Over the last 18 months, AWEA has collaborated with members, including owner operators, wind turbine manufacturers, and educational institutions, with the goal of developing a cohesive wind turbine service technician core skill set. The purpose of creating this skill set is to assure that educational institutions have a clear understanding of core skills needed in a wind service technician as identified by AWEA industry members.

Currently AWEA has identified 30 Wind Technician education programs with at least 10 more just commencing or developing a program. One of the pioneers is Columbia Gorge Community College in Oregon. Their program commenced in the fall of 2007 and has seen a rapid increase in the number of students. By next fall they should have approximately 106 students enrolled each year.

Background Information

On November 19th, 2009 the finalized skill set was approved by the AWEA Board.  The future steps are to develop a method to review the current programs of educational institutions and establish a Board of Review with AWEA staff and non-staff experts, which will determine how to provide the “AWEA Seal of Approval” to all institutions that teach the approved skills.
