China Edges Out U.S. as Best Place to Invest in Renewables
International consulting firm Ernst & Young, which publishes a regular listing of Renewable Energy Country Attractiveness Indices, has just moved China into the top spot, ending a four-year reign by the U.S.

The two countries were tied for first in June, but China has edged ahead since then because of Congress's failure to enact a national Renewable Energy Standard (RES) that would reduce investment uncertainty, Ernst & Young said.

The finding echoes a repeated series of warnings from AWEA and wind energy companies that the U.S. needs a strong RES to compete successfully for the new factories and skilled manufacturing jobs wind energy brings that can revitalize the industrial sector of our economy (see, for example, Renewable Energy Industry Leaders: RES=More Jobs).

Wind Factory Watch: Energetx: Michigan
Energetx Composites appears to be on the verge of building a new factory near Holland, Mich., to manufacture wind turbine blades, according to the Grand Rapids Press.

The company may ultimately employ 750 workers at the 120,000-square-foot site, the article said. The blade manufacturing business is an outgrowth using composite technology originally developed for the boat industry.

The Energetx news underscores the ability of wind energy to provide new manufacturing jobs in industrial states like Michigan that have been deeply affected by the recent economic recession and the loss of auto industry jobs.

Wind Factory Watch: Avanti: Wisconsin
Avanti Wind Systems, which describes itself as the "leading world market producer of work cages/service lifts, ladder systems and other personal safety systems for wind turbine towers," says it has completed a new factory in New Berlin, Wis., to supply the North American wind market.

“The factory in Wisconsin will enable us to move employment to the USA, while also allowing us to give faster and better service to our customers throughout North America,” says Kent Pedersen, General Manager for Avanti Wind Systems in the U.S.

The Avanti announcement is a reminder that the U.S. wind industry currently employs 85,000 workers, with enormous potential to grow. A national RES and other policies to promote clean energy technologies will create over 275,000 jobs in the wind sector alone. Thirty-seven nations around the world have adopted long-term, binding renewable energy targets. We urgently need similar certainty in the U.S. in order to compete successfully for the new factories and skilled manufacturing jobs wind energy brings that can revitalize the industrial sector of our economy.

Wind Factory Watch: Second Wind: Massachusetts
Second Wind, which manufactures wind measuring equipment, said recently that it will move production from Somerville, Mass., to a larger factory in Newton, Mass.

The firm said five new employees have been hired and it expects to hire another 75 workers over the next three years, according to press reports.

Wind Reduces Emissions, Redux
Be sure to catch this Greentechmedia interview of Robert Bryce, who recently criticized wind, claiming that it does not reduce emissions. On closer examination, Mr. Bryce's assertions seem dubious, to say the very least.
