4/11/2014 - AWEA to apply to OSHA for variances for wind turbine ladders
AWEA is currently in the process of doing the groundwork to apply for permanent variances from OSHA’s fixed ladder standard for the ladders inside wind turbines. AWEA will need to apply for various variances related to ladders that are contained in both the Construction (1926.1053) and General Industry (1910.27) OSHA regulations. The standards in both are similar, simply applying to different stages of a project: construction and operations, respectively.

4/11/2014 - WINDPOWER O&M session on long-term ownership hits all the key topics
With more than 60 gigawatts of wind power operating across North America, plant owners are now facing operation & maintenance (O&M) from the perspective of both a project’s daily productivity as well as its life cycle. How owners manage challenges will have a significant impact on a projects’ life and economics. One particular session at the WINDPOWER 2014 Conference & Exhibition, “Long-Term Ownership: Key Challenges and What to Expect,” will not shy away from the tough issues.

4/4/2014 - WINDPOWER siting sessions coming at the right time
Each year the WINDPOWER Conference & Exhibition never shies away from tackling the most current topics, even the tough ones. Siting, a perennially challenging issue in some ways, has been growing in significance and become a top-priority issue for the industry in recent years. WINDPOWER 2014 promises to shed light on the latest information, news, and insights on the subject—particularly in two sessions that anyone interested in siting will not want to miss.

9/27/2013 - Next up, Massachusetts: Second major announcement in a week shows renewables progress in Northeast
Last week it was Connecticut, tapping affordable wind energy produced by EDP Renewables North America. This week it’s Massachusetts going down the same prudent road—courtesy of First Wind, Iberdrola Renewables, and Exergy Development. One business day after last Friday’s announcement of renewable energy contracts in Connecticut, neighbor Massachusetts made a splash on Monday with news that the state’s largest utilities have signed power purchase agreements with a total of six wind farms from developers First Wind, Exergy, and Iberdrola. Once again, the prices for the wind-generated electricity will come at prices that are highly competitive with the cost of other generation sources.

8/16/2013 - Massive expansion, no net ratepayer cost: Iowa regulators approve, details given for 1 GW MidAmerican wind plan
With an approval from the Iowa Utilities Board in hand, MidAmerican Energy Co. this week shared more details on its plan to add 1,050 more megawatts of wind generation in the Hawkeye State by the end of 2015—a massive expansion that the company notes will stabilize rates and even save customers money.

8/16/2013 - Spotlight on Small Wind: A staple of solar, leasing comes to distributed wind
Two of the challenges of distributed wind deployment are the initial capital costs as well as the associated risk the owner incurs when purchasing and installing a turbine. Certainly, the payback might be well worth the investment down the road, but installing a distributed wind turbine can be capital intensive from the perspective of an individual or small entity. United Wind believes it's solved the issue.

AWEA to adopt International Standards
The American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) is an accredited American standard developer (ASD) for wind energy American National Standards (ANS). The AWEA Wind Energy Standard Development Committee (WSC) is intending to adopt several international standards from the International Electrotechnical Commission Technical Committee 88 (IEC TC 88) – Wind Turbines. The IEC TC 88 develops international standards for wind turbines that convert wind energy into electrical energy. These standards address design requirements, engineering integrity, measurement techniques and test procedures. AWEA also administers the United States Technical Advisory Group (US TAG) for TC 88, which is the US representation on the TC 88.

Lowest offshore costs, Clemson test facility tours, & wind purchases flowing in: Southeast wind conference resides at hub of emerging regional market
The Southeastern states from Virginia to Florida are home to over 65 wind-related manufacturing facilities that support thousands of wind energy jobs in the region. The number of these supply chain facilities could expand significantly as land-based and offshore wind developments begin in the region. Besides having a highly skilled manufacturing base, the Southeast has several other competitive advantages, including the lowest estimated construction cost for offshore wind projects on the East Coast, according to the Energy Information Administration. The region is also home to nearly half of the offshore wind resource and five of the six largest electricity markets on the East Coast. Here are just some of the recent activities and announcements that highlight the wind industry’s momentum in the region—and underscore the importance of an upcoming wind energy event.

Made-in-the USA wind power jobs
Wind energy is a made source of employment for rural and Rust Belt America. There are now over 100,000 wind jobs across all 50 states, and that number could grow to 380,000 by 2030. Over 500 U.S. factories make wind turbines and parts for them, employing over 25,000 U.S. workers.

Manufacturing
With more than 500 facilities in 43 states, the U.S. wind manufacturing industry is a vibrant source of economic activity, providing investment and quality jobs in communities across the country. Meet the 2015 Program Committee

Meet with your elected officials to advocate for wind energy Members Only Content

You have elected officials at the federal and state level. On the federal level, you have two U.S. Senators and one U.S. Representative. On the state level, you have at least one senator and one representative, depending on which state you live in (except Nebraska, where you have one state senator only).

You are a constituent of each of these elected officials. Their job is to represent your interests, and in order to do their job well, they need to hear from you.

How to meet face-to-face with your senators and representatives

Your federal officials have offices both in Washington, D.C. and in your congressional district. Meeting your officials, or their staff members, in person is a great opportunity to begin to build strong relationships with them.

To set up a meeting, you must submit a meeting request letter to your elected official's scheduler.

The Cost of Wind Energy in the U.S.
Wind energy is one of the most affordable forms of electricity today. Recent improvements in turbine technology has reduced the cost of wind energy, allowing electricity consumers and utilities to lock in low, affordable electricity rates through 20 to 30 year contracts.

The Wind Energy Siting Handbook
The Wind Energy Siting Handbook was developed by the AWEA Siting Committee, in collaboration with Nixon Peabody LLP and Tetra Tech EC, Inc., to inform wind energy developers and other interested parties about environmental siting issues relevant to land-based commercial-scale wind energy project development in the United States.

U.S. Energy Incentives
Energy Incentives or subsidies at the Federal and State level have long been used in the U.S. to encourage investment in domestic, homegrown, affordable energy production with every energy source receiving government support today. Incentives to spur domestic and secure energy production have come in many forms over the past century, such as tax breaks, direct investment, research & development, government risk insurance, and favorable market rules or regulations. Support for U.S. wind power enhances energy diversity and energy security, promotes rural economic development, supports domestic manufacturing, protects consumers from price volatility and reduces power sector impact on the environment.

Wind and reliability: baseload power
Wind energy is a growing part of a diverse generation mix with different resources providing some combination of all the features needed by grid operators to keep the lights on: energy, capacity and flexibility.

Wind energy site safety: Housekeeping maintains a clean site to keep workers injury-free
“Housekeeping” is another word for keeping the wind job site clean and orderly.

Wind energy and storage
Large amounts of wind energy are reliably being integrated into the electric grid without storage; while storage may be helpful for the electric grid in the future, it is not necessary to significantly expand the deployment of wind energy.

Wind energy and the State of the Union

Wind Energy Conserves Water
Wind energy conserves water in the power sector. The power sector withdraws more water than any other sector in the United States, including the agricultural sector. In addition to the avoided emissions provided by generation of clean wind energy in the U.S., wind power can also reduce or avoids consumption of water, which is heavily relied on to cool thermal power plants.
