In 2013, the U.S. market for small wind systems (up to 100 kW) saw 5.6 MW of new capacity in sales (representing nearly 2,700 units) and $36 million in installed system revenue. Small wind turbines sold during 2013 brought cumulative U.S. sales to 222 MW, representing more than 157,000 total units sold.
Exports from U.S.-based small wind turbine manufacturers increased 66% from 2012. Seventy-six percent of U.S. manufacturers’ new small wind turbine sales capacity went to non-U.S. markets, reflecting a substantial increase from 2012.
Thirty-one manufacturers and refurbishers with a 2013 U.S. sales presence, including those from Canada, Mexico, Europe, China and South Africa, reported sales of 57 small wind turbine models worldwide (53 models in U.S.)
